Procedures

Endoscopic assessment and treatment

Colonoscopy

Examination of the large bowel to investigate symptoms, assess surveillance needs and identify or remove polyps.

Gastroscopy

Examination of the oesophagus, stomach and first part of the small bowel to investigate upper gastrointestinal symptoms.

Therapeutic endoscopy

Polypectomy and selected advanced procedures, including dilatation, stenting and enteral access where clinically appropriate.

Reasons for referral

When endoscopy may be considered

  • Rectal bleeding or a persistent change in bowel habit
  • Iron-deficiency anaemia or unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Positive bowel screening test
  • Personal or family history requiring bowel surveillance
  • Swallowing difficulty, reflux or upper abdominal symptoms
  • Follow-up of previous polyps or gastrointestinal disease

Quality and recognition

Experienced endoscopic care

Dr Burton holds Conjoint Committee recognition in gastrointestinal endoscopy and has extensive experience in diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy and gastroscopy. He has performed more than 500 endoscopic procedures annually and has an ongoing interest in endoscopy quality and governance.
